In the district of Belem in Lisbon are a must to visit the tower and the Jeronimos Monastery, among the best examples of the Manueline style, very popular in Portugal.
What to visit in Belem
Located near the mouth of the Tagus River, Belém Tower is a monument built in honor of the Portuguese sailors who were leaving for the unknown in search of new lands to explore, sailing across the ocean towards unexplored routes. The Tower of Belem was built by King Manuel I, from which it took the name style, designed by Francisco de Arruda to cheer the great discoveries made by surfers, including the route to India by Vasco de Gama.
The tower was built in the bed of the river, between 1515 and 1521, is now attached to the mainland on the right bank of the river, and in the past it was used as a place used to toll collection of ships in transit direct to Lisbon.
It is perhaps the most exemplary monument of Lisbon, like the tower wanted by King Manuel I, built between the beginning and the end of 1500. The exterior, very glitzy, consists of architectural elements of exceptional beauty, typical of the Manueline style including sculptures of flowers and exotic animals, mixed with recurring symbols in the art of navigation Portuguese, also hit at first sight the access portals to be admired for the richness of detail.
The interior, on the contrary, is very simple and single aisle, to see the various chapels, including the Cappella Maggiore, the Sacristy and the Royal Pantheon. The cloister has a square shape, with many elaborate decorations and sculptures. In Jeronimos Monastery are also the tombs of King Manuel I, Vasco de Gama, the navigator, Luis de Camoes and Fernando Pessoa, poets.
Pastry Shop Belem
For every tourist, visiting the Belem district, has recommended a stop at the famous pastries pasteis de Belém, to taste excellent pastries baked continuously and therefore always fresh. This pastry shop bakes delicious cakes since 1837, made with recipes jealously guarded secret, known only to a few people.
You can taste at the bar or to sit in the back room. The cakes Portuguese of puff pastry and egg, covered with icing sugar and cinnamon, are very delicious.
